Landscape

Landscape

The earlier works are landscape based; they do not relate to any specific location but are imagined and invented. He uses mixed media in their construction combining monoprint material and photographic sources that are then manipulated and further worked into with oil paint. These images explore ideas of space, time and scale; Multiple viewpoints, the anatomy of earth formations, relationships between the microcosmic and macrocosmic, and the geometry of land mapping. In some images fragments or sections of the human figure are embedded within the strata and contours of the terrain.

Alan:

“I think the landscapes also have a psychological topography in which the desire to escape into the ‘natural’ is undermined by the vulnerability of such ideals of refuge.”
