Still Life

Within this genre Alan has explored the idea that motifs from the past might unexpectantly just 'pop up' on to the surface like an unsolicited image suddenly appearing on our computer screens. More recent works exploit the symbolism attached to the depiction of objects in early still life painting. Again extensive use is made of works from the past to generate ideas.

Alan states:
"I have become very interested in the meaning that can be given to simple inanimate objects. This has lead me to look at Dutch still life and floral painters like Pieter Claesz and Ambrosius Bosscheart and playfully subvert some of the moral messages that they present."
